An engine exploded. The harder problem came next. Qantas 32 had just left Singapore when its number two engine suffered an uncontained failure. The ATSB traced it to a fatigue crack in a thin-walled oil feed pipe. Leaking oil burned, the turbine disc accelerated until it burst, and debris damaged electrical, hydraulic and fuel systems. The crew did not turn straight back. Five pilots shared the workload, worked through cascading warnings, checked what the aircraft could still do, and calculated a landing with the failures they actually had. The ATPL lesson: when alerts multiply, do not chase them as separate surprises. Fly the aircraft, identify the common event, divide the work, and rebuild a reliable picture before committing to land.
