The blood vessels within that placenta can distribute blood flow unevenly, which may cause one baby to receive more nutrients and oxygen than the other. ✓ Different blood supply 🩸 When twins share a placenta, differences in blood circulation can affect how well each baby grows. ✓ Different genetic makeup Fraternal twins come from two different eggs and sperm, so they are genetically like ordinary siblings. One may naturally be smaller or larger than the other. ✓ One baby may have restricted growth Sometimes one twin doesn't grow as expected. This can be related to placental function, blood flow or other pregnancy complications and may require closer monitoring. ✓Position and individual growth patterns Twins are still individual babies. Their growth doesn't have to be exactly the same throughout pregnancy. 📌 So, is a difference in birth weight normal? A small difference can be completely normal. 📌 But a large difference in estimated or actual birth weight, especially when twins share a placenta, may need medical assessment.
