Centuries before slavery was abolished across the Atlantic world, Europeans were also being captured and enslaved along the Mediterranean. From bases in Algiers, Tunis, Tripoli, and other parts of the Barbary Coast, North African corsairs attacked ships and sometimes raided European coastal communities. Men, women, and children were taken captive. Many captives were transported to North Africa, where they could be imprisoned, sold, forced into labor, held for ransom, or incorporated into households. One famous captive was Miguel de Cervantes, future author of Don Quixote, who spent five years enslaved in Algiers before being ransomed in 1580. (Cambridge University Press) The scale was significant. One widely cited historical estimate suggests Barbary corsairs captured around 1.25 million predominantly European people between 1530 and 1780, although historians debate attempts to calculate a precise total. (Cambridge University Press) By the early 19th century, European military and diplomatic pressure increasingly suppressed the enslavement of Christians. In 1816, a British-Dutch attack on Algiers resulted in an agreement ending Christian slavery there and the liberation of roughly 2,000 captives. France’s conquest of Algiers followed in 1830. (Cambridge University Press) The Atlantic plantation system and Mediterranean captivity were different institutions with different scales, racial structures, economies, and historical consequences. But both belong to the global history of human enslavement. Slavery has existed across civilizations, continents, religions, and peoples—and none of its victims should be forgotten. #BarbaryPirates #BarbaryCorsairs #SlaveryHistory #EuropeanHistory #learnhistoryontiktok
