Totally get the rationale, however people are buying it because of him - the everyday, nonprofessional guy. I’m sure you have heaps of movies with fellow sw’s yet the amateur one gets more views. That is the primary reason people think he should be paid imo.

I feel like just because someone is aware, that doesn’t make it fair. If money is being made as a result of their actions they absolutely deserve a cut - especially given that there wouldn’t be a product without them.

If thats what they agreed to at the start then thats it. Personally I’d ask for a % either in $$$, or additional bookings. And then if you didnt agree to that then it wouldn’t happen. Easy.

would you feel exactly the same if it was the other way around? it feels ick to me them not getting paid (I wouldn't think 50/50 would be fair though) but I'm aware it's completely outside of my world so that'll be part of it

It seems pretty obvious why they don't get a cut. It would be different if they didn't agree to be filmed, or if they were convinced to participate. But that wasn't/isn't the case at all.
