For those who are confused: it’s being a non practicing Muslim! You grew up in a Muslim household or country so u celebrated Ramadan or Eid occasionally but u don’t necessarily follow the teachings of Islam (or maybe follow some of it)!

This is such a white peoples thing, you can’t be culturally Muslim, because Muslims don’t have a specific culture! Asian Muslims and African Muslims have different cultures and customs the practice is the only difference. He’s culturally Turkish.

If you’re confused about the term “culturally (religious)”, it means you are fluent in the culture of that religion without necessarily subscribing to the beliefs. For instance, a cultural Christian might celebrate Christmas with Santa Clause and candy canes, and a cultural Muslim might fast on Ramadan and abstain from eating pork products, but neither have to believe in God.

why do people act like culture and religion arent inherently intertwined like someone could be raised pretty much completely atheistically and still say "oh my god" and celebrate Christmas because Christianity is inherent to their culture, even if in a small way

For us they call it practicing vs non-practicing Muslim. We don't use "cultural muslim" as term.

I use that term all the time. If a country is majority Muslim then even if you’re Christian or Atheist or whatever you’re growing up there you’re going to be “culturally Muslim”

My parents grew up in a Muslim majority country. they themselves, and their families are not Muslim, but like a lot of things that we engage in as a family are culturally Muslim. Like we don’t eat pork. And we don’t drink.
