@uraan_stories_official: Ottoman Soldiers Crossed Rivers on Inflated Sheep-Skin Rafts Before rubber inflatable boats existed, Ottoman armies used a river craft called the kelek. Animal hides were removed carefully so they remained like large leather bags. The openings were sealed, air was blown inside, and the inflated skins were tied beneath a wooden platform. One Ottoman account describes a kelek using around 40 sheep-skin floats. Each air-filled skin displaced water. Together they could support soldiers, weapons, supplies, and the wooden deck above the river. Boatmen then used long poles or oars to steer through the current and avoid rocks. During preparations for the 1638 Baghdad campaign, Ottoman records even mention tens of thousands of animal-skin floats and hundreds of keleks. A simple animal hide became serious military transport technology. #OttomanHistory #IslamicHistory #MilitaryEngineering #AncientTechnology #HistoryTok
