My dad started out selling gum on the border. One day, he went into a barbershop hoping to sell his gum there, but the owner told him he couldn’t. Instead, he offered my dad a chance to shine customers’ shoes while they waited for their haircuts and told him he could keep whatever tips he earned. Eventually, the owner trusted my dad enough to let him come inside and sweep the floors. The same man also owned a fabric store, so he began sending my dad there to run errands. Little by little, my dad spent more time around the shop and eventually learned how to sew & to this day he still has his little shoe shine wooden box. 😭

When I was younger, my parents would spend the entire year collecting toys. Then, when Christmas came around, we’d set up in TJ and give them away to all these children. Seeing those kids’ faces was something I’ll never forget. It’s so heartbreaking seeing so many children being stripped of the innocent childhood they deserve.
