@therestaurantlaunch: And honestly, I understand both sides. As a server, autograt protected me from the reality that large parties can require 3x the work and sometimes leave 5% tips. But somewhere along the way, many restaurants stopped treating autograt as protection and started treating it as a guarantee. That’s where trust gets damaged. If the service was slow… If communication was poor… If standards weren’t met… Autograt shouldn’t become a shield that prevents accountability. And guests should never have to play detective to figure out whether gratuity was added. Tell them directly. Not hidden. Not mumbled. Not buried at the bottom of the check. Because the moment guests feel tricked, we lose credibility. What if managers had to quality check large parties before gratuity was applied? What if autograt was tied to standards instead of assumptions? Hospitality is built on trust. And trust is built on transparency. Restaurant owners and managers: where do you stand on autograt? I never add gratuity if the option is there I always leave to the guests decision .... I've always ended up with more than what the gratuity would have been!
