if someone cares and talks about a few things really hard, I believe they genuinely care.
If someone is constantly griping about everything everywhere, they're just moral policing for the ego hit.

at some point between millennials and gen z people started equating having opinions to making a legitimate change in the world. especially female leftists. if you have the "correct" opinion you are helping the world. if you have the "wrong" opinion you are destroying the world. it is wild

Then, if you do give a pair of socks to someone, five thousand people chime in with "Why did you give them socks and not food?" "Why did you give them socks, they’re just going to turn around and sell them for drugs!" "Why didn’t you give ME socks?" "Why did you only give them a pair of socks, you can afford to give more, after all you own more than one pair!" You can never win

We were never meant to know every bad thing that’s ever happened, and we certainly weren’t meant to get it all instantaneously. You have to scale down sometimes to the community immediately surrounding you, that’s where you can make the biggest impact

dolly parton did so much good because she really focused on underprivileged children and families in her home region. Her work then was able to spread country-wide. don’t half-ass many things, whole-ass one thing!

If we all just picked ONE ISSUE that we cared deeply about and tackled that one issue everything would be resolved so fast. Everyone who has a heart for animal saving, go save animals. Everyone who has a heart for helping the homeless, go help the homeless. Everyone who has a heart for saving specific plants or regions of the world, go save those regions. But exactly the issue is that everyone is convinced if you don’t worry about EVERYTHING then you’re a bad person. Just focus on what’s in front of you, go save the animals at your local shelter go help some homeless people get jobs and housing go restore the grasslands in your state go help elderly people who don’t understand technology go volunteer at the local veteran places and give them some time and attention. If we do the small things the big things take care of themselves

People are too concerned with not doing something bad, and not concerned enough with doing something good

What a strange and flawed way to view being a decent person. The writer took a reasonable point, that some people worry too much about small things, and extrapolates it to paralysis. When irl people that care about multiple things at once are chilling and being rational while multitasking. This feels almost psyop levels of “stop asking questions! Just focus on yourself! You’re too weak and frail to focus on more than one thing!”

We can nuance this to death and maybe we should, but as a chronic worrier about a trillion current events and sociopolitical issues, there isn’t one thing i disagree with in this post.

the first sign of "community" was someone helped someone else heal. they didn't leave them to die. did they know each other? we don't know. did they love each other? we don't know. but we know they helped them heal, kept them safe, fed them, and let them heal to keep going forward together. that's what we all should do and want to do.

if your solution is to turn your back on the problems that our country creates for others then i want no part of the future you envision. Imperialistic exploitation doesnt exist in a vacuum

I don’t totally disagree but remember that when your tax dollars are directly paying for people to be bombed, It’s not unreasonable for people to encourage you to care about that. Our actual impact is globalized, not just our ability to learn about the rest of the world. Our impact isn’t abstract, its as real as a fucking bomb in someone’s roof

there aren't enough people who care, because the people who don't get afraid that the people who do are speaking too loudly and doing too good that it affects how the fascist government threatens them. and because of the few people who do good, it is society's mindset that the 70% of the rest of them don't have to do anything. tired of excuses honestly

You SHOULD care about the rest of the world enough to say that the people out fixing those problems should get the federal funding from our government they need from the funds our society earmarks for aid. Outside of that, get your hands busy fixing your LOCAL issues. Everyone is local to somewhere and if every local in every place started fixing things, we would have far fewer issues in our society.
.
I once said I'd never have kids but if I ever chose to parent I'd adopt and speculated about adopting a pair of orphans from abroad because growing up society pushed the idea that there were poor kids in need around the globe. My mother's response was "we have orphans here." She didn't mean that the orphans abroad were any less important or less deserving, but rather that that mentality created a blind spot and that the people in our own community with the same needs were being overlooked.
.
Coming from Appalachia, where we have a strong culture of taking care of our own, that message really hit home.
.
The idea that other people have worse problems than we do is largely propaganda to keep people believing that our quality of life is the best on the planet, when the reality is anything but. The point of this is to convince people that our system works great and if THEY are personally struggling then they are the outlier and that it is their fault.
.
It's important we challenge this way of thinking and stand in solidarity with one another. The first step to that is absolutely recognizing and addressing local need.

Absolutely fucking not. Our government is actively committing crimes against humanity abroad and the only people who have the power to stop them are American citizens. The government wants Americans to believe this shit and to think that being a good person means ignoring the things they are doing abroad and only helping other Americans. This mentality helps no one but the ruling class.
