They are highly effective blue carbon ecosystems, capturing carbon dioxide through photosynthesis and storing carbon in their trunks, roots, branches, and especially the sediments beneath them. Unlike many terrestrial soils, mangrove sediments are frequently waterlogged and low in oxygen, slowing the decomposition of organic material. As layers of sediment accumulate, carbon can remain stored underground for centuries to millennia. This ability makes mangrove conservation increasingly important in strategies addressing climate change. Their value extends far beyond carbon storage. Dense mangrove roots help reduce wave energy, stabilize shorelines, trap sediments, and limit coastal erosion, while mangrove belts can contribute to reducing the impacts of storm surges and flooding. Their tangled underwater root systems also provide nursery and feeding habitats for fish, crabs, shrimp, mollusks, and numerous other organisms. For many Philippine coastal communities, protecting mangroves therefore also means supporting fisheries, biodiversity, food security, and livelihoods. However, mangroves should not be treated as an impenetrable barrier. Their protective effect depends on factors including forest width, density, species, coastal geography, and the intensity of a storm. This is why destroying a mature mangrove forest can create consequences extending far beyond the loss of individual trees. Coastal development, conversion to aquaculture, pollution, cutting, and changes to natural water flow can degrade these ecosystems. Disturbing mangrove soils can also release some of the carbon accumulated over long periods. Protecting existing forests and scientifically restoring degraded areas can therefore deliver several benefits simultaneously: carbon storage, biodiversity conservation, fisheries support, shoreline protection, and greater climate resilience. For an archipelagic country repeatedly exposed to typhoons, coastal flooding, erosion, and rising seas, healthy mangrove ecosystems are not wasted coastal land.
