@hawaiirightnow: 🚨 HURRICANE LOWELL IS BACK TO CATEGORY 5 Hurricane Lowell has restrengthened into a powerful Category 5 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 160 mph. As of 5 p.m. Friday, Lowell was about 600 miles south-southwest of Honolulu and moving west at 7 mph. The storm is still forecast to slow down and make a turn toward the north or north-northeast on Sunday. Confidence in the forecast track is increasing, with the center currently expected to pass west of Niʻihau and Kauaʻi during its closest approach Monday into Monday night. Lowell could still be at or near major hurricane strength at that time. Potentially damaging winds, including possible hurricane-force winds, could impact Kauaʻi and Niʻihau on Monday. Heavy rain from Lowell’s outer bands could begin affecting the islands Sunday afternoon and continue into early next week. Kauaʻi and Hawaiʻi Island could see 3 to 6 inches of rain, with isolated totals above 10 inches possible.
