This is for everyone in the comments spreading misinformation about spall from steel plates: There are 0 reported cases of anyone actually dying from the spall. Your plate carrier catches spall, and anti spall coating on plates also helps mitigate it. Again, no one has died from metal shavings flying at them from the impact source of their steel plate. This rumor has been around for about 2 decades and it's annoying as shit

I got Two Ceramic plates for my Vest, it’s very nice and lightweight plus you wouldn’t even know it’s there unless you hit it

Personal experience says ceramic plates DO INDEED transfer the impact energy through the vest. 2003, took 5 rounds to the front plate, stopped all but a fragment (still in my chest to this day). 9 broken ribs and a cracked sternum.

Steel is horrible. Steel not breaking means not only does it turn all that force into blunt force that your chest has to take. It also shatters the bullets and it’ll offen hit your neck. So not only do you get a cracked rib cage, you also get a hole in ye neck.

Ceramics all the way. In Afghanistan and Iraq, they would call us robots bc of how quick we could stand back up after being hit in the chest and continue fighting. Steel causes small shrapnel and can also break bones from the kinetic impact.

And so, the humble requisitions officer handed me the steel plates and spake: “Woe, spalling be upon ye.” And it was true

Ceramics are far superior to steel, sure steel will stop the round from putting a home in your torso, but it’ll put holes in your neck, arms, legs, and anything else around it

If you have steel plates you can also wrap with duct tape to help with spall

Yeah when it comes to metal plates they are much cheaper, but the weight absolutely is a problem. I had to wear plates five straight years when I was in the military. You may not think a few extra ounces here and there is that bad, but the military has a saying "Ounces lead to pounds and pounds lead to pain". You wear some plates for a few hours and you'll discover that very quickly.

also dont forget that if you dont die by the bullet you will die from the small fragments hitting your chin or neck due to the same bullets hitting the steel and causing spall

The reason steel plates was mainly stopped being used is because it cause ricochet from bullets and shrapnel. Ask the Vietnam vets and why most never wore them it wasn't the weight it was a death wish on top of that.
