His final defeat came at the Battle of Waterloo, after which he was exiled to the remote island of Saint Helena. Napoleon died there on 5 May 1821, aged 51. His legacy remains deeply controversial. He is remembered simultaneously as a brilliant military strategist, a powerful reformer, and an ambitious ruler whose wars caused enormous destruction across Europe.
