He was fifty-three, too heavy to walk and too ill to ride, and had to be winched onto his horse with a hoist. He never fought. His engineers mined the castle at Boulogne, the town surrendered on terms, and the French garrison marched out past his army with their weapons, their drums and their colours flying. Four days later he put on his armour and rode in through the breach — and on that same day his ally the Emperor signed a separate peace with France and left him to fight it alone.
