okay but do you remember everything being swag in 2012? it's the same thing. language shifting, youth having fun with a word for a while and then letting go. chic is going to be gone in a couple of months and replaced by another adjective.

I get the people arguing that it’s slang because it is, the more worrying thing is that it’s totally centered around rampant consumerism and the reduction of women. Two things that are vital we prevent!

Loved reading this and very much agree. I think however that part of the infantilising comes from the fact that a lot of ppl in their mid-late 20s don’t get to grow up as quickly atm due to other issues in society, such as housing and the jobs market. More and more people are still living at home and so can understand where the desire for infantilising then comes from. Secondly, I personally don’t mind the exploration of how to say someone died by suicide other than our traditional term. “Committed suicide” implies a crime was committed and feel we should explore how to move away from that notion.

every generation had their trendy lingo...I dont believe this is something new. the problem is that many young people are exposed only to tiktok, no books or movies or anything else

very interesting analysis thank you for posting!! i think this is kind of what language just DOES. every generation has slang that older people find vexing/perplexing/oversimplifying. i think this analysis identifies how Internet/algorithms amplify new language/buzz words correctly. i wonder how *new* the concept of younger generation's language being co-opted by brands/corporations is. certainly exemplified by social media but i wonder if it is true that Gen z is the first generation to have their slang capitalized on to such an extent. much to chew on :)

Taking this too seriously it's slang you use while on your phone to have a bit of fun people don't really talk like this maybe some people do but slang changed with the times throughout history ,

Yes, all generations have slang, but never before has it been this tied to consumerism and dissociation from reality and issues surrounding us

personally i see whimsical as a non-material thing, for example, i’m pretty sure fairies aren’t consumerists but they’re the most whimsical

I hate the word "girlie". As if calling adult women "girl" wasn't infantilising enough already...
