The United Sacred Harp Convention is held annually around this time of year. But this year is special: it was the introduction of the new edition of the most widely sung shape note hymn book, the Sacred Harp 2025 Edition, which is the first time this book has been revised in over 30 years. 600 singers came together to sing the new songs added to the book and rock out to old favorites, like the one you’re hearing here. Some of those old songs have been around for hundreds of years. It was a once in a generation, possibly once in a lifetime chance to sing with that many singers at once, and perhaps is a glimmer of the sound you used to hear 150 or so years ago, when there are reports of thousands of people crowded into shape note conventions like this one. Shape notes were invented in the late 1700s as a way to teach people with no formal musical training how to read music, sing in four parts, and learn new tunes. The note heads in the music literally have different shapes, and each shape corresponds to a fa-so-la or do-re-mi syllable. A lot of the texts are Christian, because they took root in the churches (all gospel music was once written in shape notes), but people of all faiths and no faith are welcome (like the author of this text!) While there are some highly skilled musicians in the crowd, no one is a “professional” at shape note singing. The vast majority are amateur musicians, with no formal training whatsoever — just a lot of practice at singings like this. #singing #shapenotesinging #sacredharp #folkmusic #music
