All jokes aside… I was a carpenter for 15+ years and every time I had to work with MDF my arms, hands, chest and back used to come out in a bright red rash that looked like prickly heat. Apparently I was allergic to the glue in the MDF. Granted I never quit because of it but it is possible he could be allergic to something in the timber, especially if it’s treated.
