while the reasoning for originally picking mercator could be rooted in racism. today it is the best way of showing the globe on a flat surface. while the new map shows the country sizes more accurately. its actually off in different ways. the shapes and angles of countries are warped which means towns and cities are stretched. which means if you stuck this map on Google maps places will appear way more skewed in comparison. happy for this to be the best representation of the "size" of our planet. but for practical use you really cannot get better than the mercator protection (unless you have an actual globe)
