2025 ORO FESTIVAL AT MY HOMETOWN, ISARA REMO... "...Gbeyin ilekun ko yo owo! Gbeyin ilekun ko yo owo ooo Mu run r'oro, k'Oro looo😜🙋" That would be the first line that is going to rent the air later tonight at Isara Remo and some of its neighboring towns in Remo North. The Oro Festival is a festival of culture and tradition which is one of the longest festivals that we have been celebrating since olden days, not only at Isara but it's the same thing in almost all the towns in Remo and Yoruba towns. This is a very important festival that our forebears used to cleanse the land and wade off the evil that may befall the people and the community annually. Those were the days when love, unity, and community development were our forebears' watchword; People would travel down to Isara from their various villages to celebrate the festival. There are standards and rules 🚷 for the festival, both males and females enjoy the festival but I think the males enjoy it most. The festival is gender sensitive 🚻, Males are free to go outside and walk freely and have fun while the females are indoors from Friday night to Sunday morning, preparing all sorts of foods for us to eat. There is usually food excess because your female friends and family are expecting you to come and wine and dine with them as they are indoors. That's when you would see Ikokore Oro, Eba Oro, Iyan Oro... Orisirisi😜 The festival has norms and standards as I have said earlier, for example; 7 days down the line, the town crier would go round the town to announce to everyone that there wouldn't be sound, drumming, partying, or any kind of disturbance across the town. "won ti DAKUDU" or "won ti lu ALUWO". Later today, the women and ladies would be going indoors while the men, including a 1-year-old boy, would stay outdoors to have fun and enjoy the festival while it lasts. There is going to be a lot of fun, The Ekute musicians would go around people's homes to sing their praise and pray for them, they would expect some coins 🪙 in return, and that's when you would hear them singing... "Oooroo! Baaba ooo eee Ooorooo baba ooo eee! Ooro baba baba Oooroo baba ooo eee" “Oni ule ibe oooo, Tere aja, Aja n tere Ve ni ku daanu ooo, Teere Aja, Aja n tere” "...Gbeyin ilekun ko yo owo! Gbeyin ilekun ko yo owo or, Mu run r'oro, k'Oro looo😜🙋" But if the person decides not to give them kobo, They would reverse it to say... "SHI UWO KUKUN YAWUN"😂 Also during the Oro festival... The WORO people are there as well... It's an avenue to reveal the unethical, excesses, shortcomings, and absurdities of people in the town and also sing the praises of worthy sins and daughters who have done well in the town over the years. Everyone who has done bad things would be given a nice number. Even if the king did something wrong, this is the only time you would tell him to his face and he would even spray you money. Even chiefs and a lot more people usually get a special number every year. On the other hand as well, They sing praises of people who have done well for the progress and development of the town for the year. If you do good you will hear your number, and if you do bad you will also hear it. It's just a method of cleansing the land and making the people law-abiding citizens. Oh! My dear hometown, Isara Remo... It's usually fun and lovely for the 3days celebration, sure you all are going to enjoy it. In the recent past, sons and daughters of Isara now traveled home to celebrate the Oro festival. People would hold their phones to record the happenings in town... The phone has now replaced the usual tape recording that we usually have in those days. I want to congratulate, The Onimale and all the Oloros in town, The chiefs, the Oniworo, The Elekutes and all the sons and daughters of Isara Remo for the opportunity to witness another festival.
