Tesla's Cybercab is a purpose-built autonomous robotaxi that recently reached its first major production milestone. Designed without a steering wheel or pedals, it represents the company's shift toward "transportation as a service."  Latest Updates (February 2026) Production Launch: The first production Cybercab officially rolled off the line at Gigafactory Texas on 17 February 2026. Timeline: While the first unit is complete, volume production is expected to begin in April 2026. Elon Musk has cautioned that the early ramp-up will be "agonizingly slow". Testing: Engineering prototypes have been spotted testing in Austin, the Bay Area, and as far as Alaska for subzero reliability.  Key Specifications & Design Price: Targeted to be under $30,000. Musk recently doubled down on this goal, predicting consumers could buy one for this price before 2027. Autonomous-Only: The interior features only two seats and a 20.5-inch central touchscreen. There are no manual driving controls; it relies entirely on Tesla’s vision-based Full Self-Driving (FSD) system. Wireless Charging: The vehicle lacks a traditional charging port and instead uses inductive (wireless) charging with over 90% efficiency. Range: Estimated at approximately 200–300 miles per charge using a 35–60 kWh battery. Doors: Features power-operated butterfly doors for easy entry in tight urban spaces.  Operational Model Tesla plans to allow private owners to add their Cybercabs to a Tesla ride-hailing network. Owners could potentially earn income while the car is not in use, with Tesla taking a 25–30% commission.  Challenges Regulatory Hurdles: The absence of a steering wheel and pedals requires specific NHTSA exemptions to operate on public roads. Naming Disputes: Tesla recently faced a trademark denial for the name "Cybercab" in some jurisdictions, leading to potential rebrands like "Cybervehicle".
