Lonely Soul :
Loneliness can feel like a kind of bereavement. It is a quieter grief. It is the accumulation of all the people who did not stay. All the relationships that never became. All the love I carried that had nowhere to go. It is grieving the partner who never chose me. The best friend who never stayed. The family who never loved me as I was. The person who never looked at me and said, “You are the one I choose.”
For me, loneliness has never meant that I lacked love inside myself. The heartbreak is that I had so much love to give. A heart that wanted to nurture, support, protect, encourage, comfort, and stay. A heart that did not want perfection. It only wanted to matter deeply to someone who mattered deeply to me. But so much of that love had nowhere to live. It visited people. It warmed people. It helped people. It was useful to people. But it was not chosen, cherished, protected, or kept.
After a lifetime of giving, there are days when I feel empty. Not because I never had anything inside me, but because I gave so much away. I poured tenderness, loyalty, patience, forgiveness, and care into people and places where it never truly took root. And now I am left with the silence. No one to come home to. No one to call in the middle of the night. No one whose life naturally stops when my heart is breaking. No one who would notice if I disappeared from the world.
I am not saying this from bitterness. I am saying it from truth. I have made a kind of peace with being alone, but peace does not mean the absence of pain. I can accept the shape of my life and still mourn it. I can keep living, working, smiling, functioning, and finding small joys while also carrying the private knowledge that I am profoundly alone.
Maybe that is what I wish people understood. Some of the loneliest people are the ones with the biggest hearts. The ones who show up. The ones who remember. The ones who make others feel seen while quietly wondering if anyone will ever truly see them.
I was here. I loved. I cared. I gave what I had. And even if I was never chosen in the way I longed to be chosen, my heart was real. My love was real. My life was real. And that should have mattered
