Popular cults are just less controlling than smaller ones. Otherwise they are similar: they have magical beliefs, often a doomsday scenario, special restricted lifestyles, fasting, abstaining, they discourage members from talking/marrying outside of their faith, etc.

A cult and a religion can overlap, but that doesn’t make them the same thing. The problem here is that “cult” has several different meanings. In its older, neutral sense, it simply referred to a system of worship, ritual or devotion, which is why dictionaries can list “religion” as a synonym and historians can talk about the “cult of Apollo” or the “cult of Isis.” Britannica also explains this older use of the term. But that does not mean “cult” and “religion” are interchangeable categories. A cult in that historical sense can actually exist within a larger religion, while religion is the broader system of beliefs, practices, traditions and communities. This is also why saying “Christianity started as a cult, so Christianity is just a successful cult” oversimplifies the history. Early Christianity began as a small movement within a Jewish context and gradually developed into a distinct religion. And none of this should be confused with the modern meaning of “cult,” which usually refers to a highly controlling or manipulative group. Basically, showing that “cult” can mean “religious worship” doesn’t prove that every religion is a cult in the sense people normally mean today, it just shows that the word “cult” has multiple definitions.
