🏃 10 ways to make running feel easier 👇 I’m testing these as a man who started running at 55 and still considers “let’s run” a suspicious sentence. 1️⃣ Start slower than you think. If you’re gasping in the first few minutes, ease up. My opening stride looks like I’m “rushing” to an insurance convention. 2️⃣ Promise yourself two minutes. Getting out the door is often the hardest part. After two minutes, you can decide whether to keep going. This is how I trick my brain, which apparently has the negotiating skills of a toddler. 3️⃣ Break the run into chunks. Make it to the mailbox. Then the next corner. Then the tree. In Kansas, be careful which tree you pick. 4️⃣ Run when you feel your best. Find a time that works with your energy and your schedule. My body prefers “after a nap,” but it has yet to submit a workable training plan. 5️⃣ Pay attention to your breathing. Settle into a comfortable rhythm. If counting breaths helps, use it. If it makes you more stressed, you can stop doing math while running. I highly recommend it. 6️⃣ Put on music that helps you hold an easy pace. Save the song that makes you sprint like you’re in an action movie for another day. I cannot afford the stunt double. 7️⃣ Try the conversation test. On an easy run, you should be able to speak in sentences. “Call… somebody… tell… Nattie…” means I need to slow down. 8️⃣ Eat before a longer run if you need to. Give yourself time to digest and learn what sits well with you. A breakfast burrito right before running can make the entire route a high-stakes decision. 9️⃣ Talk to yourself like you’re on your side. “I can slow down and keep going” works better for me than “I’m terrible at this.” My legs provide enough criticism without help from management. 🔟 Finish some runs feeling like you could do more. You don’t have to empty the tank every time. I’m saving a little fuel in case this Ferrari thing ever works out. 🏎️ Running may never feel effortless, but it can feel better. And if you see me out there looking effortless, please check that the video isn’t paused. Follow along while I work toward my first 5K. Mocha thinks every run is for her. 🐾 #BeginnerRunner #RunningTips #Over50Fitness #5KTraining #RunningHumor
