I’m so excited to finally share that I’m writing a book! It’s called The Default Body and it’s the project I’ve been building toward my entire career. Throughout medical school, now residency, and with my work as the ‘Medical Mythbuster,’ I kept running into the same question: Whose body was medicine actually built for? Medicine was built around an imagined patient. Often white. Male. Able-bodied. And for generations, everyone else has been measured against that default. This book traces the history, science, and human stories behind that reality. It’s about the patients who were dismissed, the clinicians who knew something felt off, and the hidden assumptions that continue to shape healthcare today. Most importantly, it’s about what it will take to build a system that truly sees all of us. I’m so incredibly grateful to be writing this book with Henry Holt, and I cannot wait to share it with you. Until then, I’d love to hear from you: Whose body does medicine overlook? What stories have I told that have resonated? What story has yet to be told? I’m reading every comment. Huge thank you to my agent Ericka Phillips @erickatiffany_ and my editor Anna Montague @theannamontague @henryholtbooks for believing in this book and in me! The Default Body. Coming soon.
