Albert Camus was born on 7 November 1913 in Mondovi, French Algeria (now part of Algeria). He grew up in poverty after losing his father during World War I when he was still an infant. His mother worked hard to support the family, and these early struggles deeply shaped his view of life and human suffering. As a young man, Camus studied philosophy at the University of Algiers, but tuberculosis interrupted his studies and affected his health throughout his life. Despite this, he developed a strong passion for literature, journalism, and theatre. He began writing essays and became involved in social and political discussions. His literary breakthrough came in 1942 with the novel The Stranger and the philosophical essay The Myth of Sisyphus. These works introduced his ideas about absurdism-the belief that life may have no clear meaning, yet humans continue searching for purpose. Later, he published The Plague and The Rebel, which established him as one of the most influential writers of the twentieth century. In 1957, Camus received the Nobel Prize in Literature at the age of 44 for his contribution to literature and human thought. Tragically, his life ended on 4 January 1960 when he died in a car accident near Sens, France, at only 46 years old. Although his life was short, his writings continue to influence readers, philosophers, and writers around the world.
