@fokumlah1: The United Nations has just made a historic decision about how Africa and the rest of the world are represented on our maps. 164 countries voted YES. Six countries abstained, including Australia, Canada, Israel, New Zealand, Singapore and Ukraine. And the United States voted NO. But why? Washington says the resolution itself is unnecessary. But more importantly, the United States objected to the broader ideological message surrounding it. That includes discussions about colonialism, reparations, historical memory, and what African countries describe as cognitive justice. But Africa sees this very differently. For many African countries, this isn't simply about changing a picture on a wall. It's about correcting the way generations have been taught to visualize the world. The Mercator projection makes countries closer to the poles appear much larger than they actually are, while Africa appears dramatically smaller. Africa is actually about fourteen times the size of Greenland. Yet on the familiar world map, the difference can look surprisingly small. So Africa is saying, let's correct the representation. The United States is saying, we don't agree with the ideological framework behind this initiative. But here's the important part. The United States voting NO does NOT stop the change. The resolution passed overwhelmingly. It encourages governments, schools, international organizations and technology companies to move toward more accurate projections, such as Equal Earth. Now, this doesn't mean every Mercator map disappears tomorrow. The resolution is not legally binding. But something important has happened. The world has officially started having this conversation. And personally, I've always had a problem with the kind of history being taught in Africa. The stories we were told. The people we were told discovered our lands. The achievements we were taught to associate with others. And the way Africa was often presented to us—as if our history began when someone else arrived. So for me, this is bigger than a map. It's about representation. It's about education. It's about memory. It's about Africans deciding that we must take another look at the stories we have been taught about ourselves. The map may be changing. But I believe this is just the beginning. #un #usa #africa #worldmap #panafricanism @𝐊el 𝐎fficial @D.Haïti @Sènatòr MENSAH @PanAfricPulse @Manie Rupert @QueenSugar @Anti-imperialist 🇬🇲 @Obed @Frances Cordoms @KENYAN🇰🇪PRINCE @Buffalo soldier @@Nick-hero

The United States opposed the UN resolution because it considered the issue an ideological and lower-priority matter for the General Assembly, while 164 countries considered correcting geographical representation important enough to support.

"Cognitive justice" is the exact phrase for this. The Mercator projection was designed for 16th-century sea navigation, not geographic accuracy, yet it inadvertently shaped global psychology by shrinking Africa to 1/14th of its actual scale relative to Greenland. The U.S. voting 'no' on the "ideological framework" proves that map-making has never been politically neutral; it’s always been about who controls the narrative. Correcting the projection is the first step in unlearning centuries of biased education.

Very well presented. The journey for Africa has just started and one that requires a lot of hard work, and careful thinking and processing of the available information. As we start work on making us acceptable to each other, we also have to redesign our educational systems, rewrite our history mark a roadmap for our joint technical development including in the nuclear industry.

Let us not be deceived again. If we have learned from the past, let us seek the truth, examine the evidence, and ask: What is the next agenda, and who benefits from it? Wisdom means not blindly following every narrative, but testing everything against truth, justice, and the Word of God.
