OM642 Engine Rebuild: Pistons, Rings & Connecting Rod Bearings. • Mercedes OM642 3.0 CDI - piston installation and bottom-end assembly. We continue the major rebuild of the OM642 engine removed from a Mercedes GL 350. In the previous part, the crankshaft, new main bearings and thrust half-rings were installed. Now we move on to the next important stage - installing the pistons and connecting rods into the engine block. • Before assembly, all required clearances were carefully checked. We measured the piston ring end gaps, checked the ring fit inside the piston grooves and inspected the cylinder condition. All measurements are within specification, so standard piston rings are being used. • In this video, I’ll show the piston assembly, piston ring installation and piston installation into the engine block. Correct ring positioning is essential, and the pistons must be installed carefully to avoid damaging the rings or cylinder surfaces. • New connecting rod bearings are installed during assembly. Special attention is given to their construction. These bearings use a sputter coating technology, with the more highly loaded upper bearing shells featuring the special coating and being installed in the connecting rods. • We also use new connecting rod cap bolts. These are critical fasteners and should be replaced during engine assembly and tightened according to the correct procedure. • The video shows the complete sequence of piston installation, connecting rod positioning, installation of the new bearing shells and rod caps, followed by the final tightening procedure. • I’ll also emphasize the importance of checking clearances before assembly. Even when standard replacement parts are being used, checking piston ring end gaps and ring groove clearances is an essential part of a proper engine rebuild. • This is another stage of the complete OM642 engine rebuild.
