@jack_gpt_: Two mechanical engineers in Newcastle want to make fertiliser out of steam and air 🌱 Facet Amtech just raised $3 million, led by Main Sequence with Uniseed 👇 ⚗️ Ammonia is the base ingredient in nitrogen fertiliser, so it sits underneath a huge share of the world's food supply. 🏭 Making it normally takes a full industrial plant. An electrolyser, an air separation unit, then a reactor to force the two gases together. 🔬 Facet's catalyst does all of that in one step, using steam and air as the only inputs. Built by Dr Peter Richardson and James Bradley at the University of Newcastle. 📈 The first pilot runs in early 2027 at 1kg a day. They want 4 tonnes a day by the early 2030s. 💭 That gap is where most catalyst startups die. But they are licensing the design instead of building the plants, so they only need one big producer to say yes. As long as it’s not another snake oil product and is actually cost effective to produce at scale this will be good.

This exemplifies the sort of innovative businesses models we need more of in Australia to help our country become truly independent from the vagaries of importing our essential fertiliser requirements. CSIRO and its harnessing of technology and innovative scientific developments for Australia's future is immense importance. Funding of CSIRO is of paramount importance towards this end.

If it sounds pretty hard, it probably is pretty hard to commercialise.
