@philosophyminis: In 1989, Stephen Covey suggested one simple exercise that we can all do to achieve what we want to achieve and become who we want to become. Imagine that you are dead, and surrounding your funeral casket, there are four people, each representing a different aspect of your life. There is a friend, a family member, a coworker, and a member of the community. What would you like these people to say about you? What eulogies would you like to hear from them? 'Oh, he was such a kind and generous person,' your colleague might say. Or, 'He was a present and loving father,' your child says, and so on. The eulogy exercise is intended to reverse engineer your life. By visualising your final chapter, you can take steps to ensure that your path now leads to where you want to go. But, of course, this meditation appears way before Stephen Covey. The Japanese samurai-turned-philosopher Suzuki Shōsan talked about a death energy. Shōsan argued that if you spend any time meditating on your death, thinking about that actual moment when you breathe your last, you are suddenly overcome, somewhat paradoxically, with renewed life. Your heart beats faster. You see the world differently. You have a death energy. Whether you call it a eulogy exercise, or death energy, or memento mori, the idea is the same. If you want to reach a certain point or to be remembered a certain way, you need to make sure that your life at the moment is on the right path.

Death energy, like memories fade. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately), unless you're some historical figure or infamous character, most of us will soon be forgotten. Of course the affect of our deeds live on in others.

I don’t like to be perceived by anyone so I’d rather no one spoke at my funeral 😂

And what do I do if I genuinely don't give a damn what anyone thinks after I'm dead? because well... I'll be dead.

Why should I trust the version of me on my deathbed more than the current version of me? Why should I be driven by what others say about me?

Hmmm…no need to say anything…there’s nobody anyway, but my partner, who is my other half…and I’d just like her to get on quickly without me if it comes to that, I’ll be in her past.

I just want to say that I’ve been watching your videos for a while now, and although not all of them resonate with me, the ones that do have altered the course of my life for the better. Thank you.

What people don’t realise is that doesn’t have to mean you’re a pushover and say yes to everything, what it can mean is that you are kind and you get kindness back. And when you don’t you just remind yourself that life is hard and you can try not to be hardened by it. You can be tough without losing your tenderness.

I found "The death of Ivan Ilyich" (John Johnson) a pretty devastating way to tell this story. Highly recommended.

Unless you accept there is an afterlife and justice for what you did, then talking about energy and phantoms is not productive. And if you do, then you will be so focused on the afterlife to care about what anyone left behind say about you.

If a genie/angel/wizard/demon appeared in front of me right now and told me a co-worker is going to be giving a eulogy for me I would have to sin down and reconsider every decision I've ever made.
