My daughter looked at me and asked if she’s ugly because no boys like her back. My heart stopped for a second. Because I understand the world she’s growing up in. Being a brown/Black girl in Utah means navigating subtle racism, exclusion, and unspoken beauty standards that center whiteness. Not in loud, obvious ways all the time, but in quiet, accumulated ways that shape who is seen, who is chosen, and who is considered desirable. And I want to be clear. I am not saying that boys who don’t like her are bad people. I’m not saying every kid is racist. Attraction is complex. Kids are kids. What I am saying is that when a society constantly sends messages about which features are praised, which skin tones are normalized, and which kinds of beauty are celebrated, children absorb that. They internalize it. And it affects who they gravitate toward, often without even realizing why. Let me say this clearly and loudly. My daughter is beautiful. She is radiant. She is smart, kind, funny, and strong. She carries so much light. She is more than enough exactly as she is. People ask why we’re still in Utah. If I had full control, I would move in a heartbeat. But there are custody realities and circumstances we cannot change. We can’t just pick up and leave, even when we want to. What I can control is how I raise her. I will raise her to know her worth. To love herself deeply. To walk in rooms knowing she belongs. And I will always be her loudest protector and biggest believer. #blackinutah #teenager #미국맘 #koreanmom #blasian @Yuri Milele
