Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently warned that disorderly moves in the Japanese yen could force leveraged positions to unwind and potentially create instability across global financial markets. This matters because the yen has historically been used as a cheap source of funding for the carry trade. Investors borrow in yen and deploy that capital into higher yielding assets around the world. When that trade reverses, liquidity can move quickly. At the same time, we are watching elevated yields and continued pressure across global sovereign bond markets. This is why I believe regulatory clarity around digital assets matters. The GENIUS Act is creating a regulatory framework for payment stablecoins and Treasury is now working through its implementation. The CLARITY Act is attempting to establish broader rules for the digital asset market. These developments are happening while the traditional financial system is navigating debt, higher borrowing costs, currency volatility and changing global capital flows. None of this means the system collapses tomorrow. It means the financial system is changing, and understanding how cash flow, assets, protection, leverage and risk work together is becoming increasingly important. Don’t operate from fear.
