It followed a visual language designed to communicate identity, status, and meaning with remarkable consistency across thousands of years. Look at the figures carved and painted on temple walls. Faces often appear in profile, while the eye is shown from the front. Shoulders face the viewer, but legs and feet turn sideways. To modern eyes, that combination can seem unusual. To an Egyptian artist, however, it allowed each part of the body to be shown from its most recognizable angle. Size mattered too. Pharaohs and gods could be depicted much larger than servants, enemies, or ordinary people. This was not a mistake in perspective. It was a deliberate way of showing importance. A ruler towering over another figure meant authority, not physical height. Color also carried meaning. Men were often shown with reddish-brown skin and women with lighter tones, while gods could appear in symbolic colors such as green, blue, gold, or black depending on the qualities being expressed. What fascinates me most is that these images were meant to do more than decorate a wall. In temples and tombs, art helped preserve names, rituals, offerings, victories, and identities for eternity. An image could become part of keeping memory alive. So when I walk past these ancient walls, I do not see simple decoration.
