@midlifetriceps1: Murphy Ranch, hidden in Rustic Canyon above Pacific Palisades, began in 1933 when roughly 50 acres were acquired under the name Jessie M. Murphy. The property was developed by wealthy couple Norman and Winona Stephens, reportedly influenced by a mysterious German, “Herr Schmidt,” who promoted Nazi ideology and predicted an American collapse. Local lore claims they envisioned a self-sufficient refuge for Nazi sympathizers awaiting a German victory, although historians caution that much of the Nazi-compound story comes from later oral histories and remains disputed. The ranch nevertheless became remarkably elaborate: terraced hillsides, orchards, irrigation, greenhouses, hundreds of concrete steps, servants’ quarters, a power station, enormous water and fuel tanks, and other infrastructure. After World War II, the property became part of Huntington Hartford’s artists’ colony, which operated until 1965. Wildfires and flooding in 1978–79 destroyed or damaged much of the remaining architecture.
