@finvory: Most people know Abraham as the father of Isaac and Ishmael. But Genesis names six other sons. After Sarah’s death in Genesis 23, Genesis 25:1 says Abraham took another wife named Keturah. She gave birth to: Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. Add Ishmael through Hagar and Isaac through Sarah, and the biblical narrative names eight sons of Abraham. Hagar is explicitly identified in Genesis as Egyptian, giving Abraham’s family a direct connection to Africa. Keturah’s ancestry is much less certain. Later traditions and interpretations have attempted to connect her and her descendants with Arabia, northeast Africa, or regions surrounding the Red Sea—but Genesis itself never identifies Keturah as African or Kushite. Her descendants nevertheless became significant within the biblical world. Most famously, Keturah’s son Midian is presented as the ancestor of the Midianites—the people among whom Moses later lived after fleeing Egypt. Abraham’s family tree was much larger and more geographically interconnected than the story of Isaac alone might suggest. Eight sons. Three mothers.
