Mexican gray wolves are apex predators with few natural predators of their own, so as their population grows, there needs to be a responsible balance in how they are managed. Without appropriate population control, including regulated hunting if and when legally permitted, growing wolf numbers can place increasing pressure on elk, deer, and other wildlife populations. Long-term conservation should protect the wolf while also maintaining healthy, sustainable numbers of the other species that share the same ecosystem.
