@gray.area.finance: Paid off my mortgage in 16 years. But he had 30 years of 10% returns compounding. £145k vs £1.4m. The gap isn’t about luck. It’s about understanding how money actually works. #investuk #investing #investtok #investinguk #investforbeginners
It’s more for peace of mind on getting rid of mortgage

Person 1 has had an extra 15 years mortgage free to spend that extra income on experiences and a better life in general etc tho? Whereas person 2 get the lump sum benefit at the end , swings and roundabouts when it comes to personal priority

I get the maths, but personally I want the security of knowing I could quit my job, or be made redundant, or have a health issue, and not have to worry about being homeless

So once the person with a mortgage has paid it off after 15 years, they have the additional income they could also put in to investments now they’re not paying off a mortgage, so what would that look like for a more accurate comparison?

Not sure the math is right. Are you factoring in that person 1 once mortgage free can add £500 + mortgage payment for the 2nd 15 years?

People who talk about investing make it sounds so perfect and great! Investing is a risk where paying off the mortgage isn't!

Yeah but you’ve got to understand and know how to invest, you can’t just go rogue on that. Personally I don’t understand it so I’d rather be mortgage free and enjoy life every month with money in my instant account

if youve got the money to overpay/invest 500 quid a month on top of your mortgage, your in the infinitecimal realm of people who live well below their means in a world where everyone lives above their means thanks to finance and other stuff, I understand the premise but this is hardly accurate, also the lack of mention on the tax you would pay upon your investments is also rather dubious

This assumes that interest rates will stay low and stock market returns will remain high of course - neither of which are certain

As someone that invests it’s crazy reading these comments seeing people that think investing is this some high risk strategy where you could lose everything when it’s literally their ticket to retiring a millionaire
