Religion may have begun with humanity’s first encounter with mystery: the attempt to understand existence, death, nature, consciousness & forces greater than ourselves. Before organized institutions, there was awe the recognition that existence itself was sacred. Gods & deities became mirrors through which humanity explored its relationship with the cosmos, community & self. This is why I choose omnism: the belief that truth isn’t necessarily confined to one religious tradition. Christianity, Indigenous spiritualities, Kemetic traditions, Hinduism, Buddhism & countless others can be viewed as different languages through which humanity has attempted to understand the same great mystery. Yet history complicates this search for truth. Christianity emerged much later than many Indigenous spiritual traditions & the ancient Kemetic religion of Egypt, whose cosmologies, rituals & concepts of divine order existed thousands of years before Christianity. Still, many Indigenous & African spiritual systems were historically demonized, suppressed or redefined as primitive or evil, particularly through colonial & missionary frameworks. Meanwhile, Christianity became the dominant spiritual framework for countless societies. This raises an important question: when we inherit a religion, how much of what we call truth is revelation & how much is history, culture, power & circumstance? Quantum mechanics offers an intriguing philosophical parallel. Measurement affects what can be observed & defined about a quantum system, although physics doesn’t prove that human consciousness literally creates reality. Yet as a metaphor, it reminds us that observation matters. We don’t experience the world without interpretation; we experience a world filtered through attention, expectation, memory & belief. Our relationship with a deity can therefore become a relationship with ourselves. If I pray to a god of compassion, I may become more capable of recognizing compassion within myself & others. If I believe I am judged, I may interpret life through guilt & fear. If I believe the divine exists within all things, I may begin to perceive sacredness everywhere. This is where religion becomes alchemical. Alchemy transforms substance; belief transforms meaning. The deity becomes both mirror & archetype, while the believer becomes both observer & participant. Belief doesn’t create the universe but it helps create the reality through which we experience it. To change what we believe about the divine may ultimately change what we believe about ourselves, how we treat others & what kind of world we become capable of seeing. #religion
