The introduction of self-loading and automatic-tipping tricycles could significantly reduce the time and physical effort required by waste collectors. Under the current system, waste workers often have to manually lift bags and other refuse into the collection vehicles, a process that can be physically demanding and slow. The proposed technology is therefore expected to improve operational efficiency while making waste collection safer and less strenuous for workers. The government’s plans also come amid discussions about the operation of Aboboyaa in major cities, particularly Accra. The broader policy direction is to ensure that such tricycles are used primarily for local collection within communities, with waste transported to designated transfer stations rather than allowing operators to undertake long journeys on major highways. This approach is intended to improve safety, reduce the presence of slow-moving waste tricycles on major roads and create a more organised waste collection chain between households, community transfer points and final disposal facilities. Another key component of the proposed overhaul is a national strategy to provide waste bins to households across the country. The household-bin programme is expected to make it easier for residents to store their waste properly before collection and could help establish a more organised door-to-door waste collection system. The government is also pushing the “polluter-pays” principle, under which households and other waste generators would be expected to pay designated sanitation charges for waste collection services. Under such a system, residents would have a clearer responsibility for the waste they generate, while sanitation service providers would be expected to offer more reliable collection, potentially directly from households. The planned combination of household waste bins, improved collection services and technologically enhanced Aboboyaa could represent a significant shift from Ghana’s existing waste management practices. The government’s objective is to develop a system where waste is properly stored at the household level, collected efficiently within communities and transported through designated channels to appropriate disposal facilities. If successfully implemented, the self-loading and automatic-tipping Aboboyaa could also reduce the physical burden on waste workers while helping to improve the speed and efficiency of refuse collection.
