David Raya saved it, Arsenal survived and eventually won 2–0 — but that does not make the original decision any less serious. And this is exactly why Mikel Arteta was so frustrated. He made the point that decisions at this level can “change the course of a season” and potentially cost a team a championship. He is absolutely right about the principle. If the Premier League genuinely considers itself the best league in the world, then the standard of officiating has to match the standard of the players, coaches and infrastructure around it. When obvious or highly questionable decisions continue to dominate conversations, something has to change. Howard Webb should not be protected simply because he occupies an important position. His job is to oversee standards. If standards are repeatedly falling short, there has to be a serious conversation about whether the right people are in the right roles. 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗜𝗦𝗡’𝗧 𝗔𝗥𝗦𝗘𝗡𝗔𝗟 𝗩𝗦 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗥𝗘𝗙𝗘𝗥𝗘𝗘𝗦. There are excellent officials in English football. There are also decisions that are incredibly difficult to understand. The answer is not to attack every referee. It is to identify the officials who consistently perform at the required level, develop them, promote them — and hold everyone else properly accountable.
