Snyderbots often bring up this scene in a negative way, but if the game had gone on longer, Superman might have eventually given in and told the truth, or he might have lied. The writing here is actually brilliant because Lex’s Russian roulette kills the hostage as early as the second round. Lex never expected it to happen that quickly, which forces him to end the game prematurely. What we get from this scene is a clear look at just how evil Lex is, along with an excellent emotional performance from David Corenswet as he conveys Superman’s pain.

This scene means more to me than any single scene in man of steel. I don’t care if this scene makes our Superman look weaker, he’s human first he’s supposed to care about every single person on earth. The fact that he cried over somebody, he barely knew dying in front of him, remember Henry murdered a lot of people fighting Zod like a lot of people and never once did he stop to think about the collateral damage he is causing. Henry Cavill Superman may have been strong. But David’s heart is bigger.
