There was a season when I was so focused on the things I wanted to see change in my husband that I lost sight of myself. I became so invested in his growth that I neglected my own. Then I realised: I cannot build a healthy marriage by making my spouse my personal project. So I shifted my focus. I started investing in myself, pursuing my dreams, growing in my faith, learning, taking care of myself and becoming more intentional about the woman I wanted to become. And something beautiful happened. My growth created room for his growth too. Not because I pressured him, but because we both became more intentional about our individual journeys and the marriage we were building together. And no, I am not saying you should stop communicating your needs or expressing your displeasure. Have the conversation. Be honest. Tell your spouse what hurts and what you would love to see change. But say what needs to be said, listen, give room for growth, and then keep living your life. You do not have to make monitoring your spouse’s growth your full time job. Go for that Master’s. Pay for that course. Pursue that career. Learn that business. Take care of yourself. Invest in your dreams. Your spouse is responsible for their journey. You are responsible for yours. Sometimes, the best way to influence your spouse is to become the healthiest, fullest version of yourself. Don’t get so lost trying to change your spouse that you lose yourself. Follow me for more conversations on healthy relationships and marriage.
