@munky.pk: I’m NOT trying to encourage anyone to do extreme sports or dangerous things. Extreme sports involve real risks. My goal is simply to create more understanding for people who consciously choose to take those risks. I constantly get comments saying extreme athletes should be excluded from health insurance because we “choose to put ourselves in danger.” But where do we draw that line? Alcohol causes around 2.6 million deaths worldwide per year. Drug use around 600,000. Motorcycling is another voluntarily accepted risk, and physical inactivity is linked to millions of preventable deaths. None of this means extreme sports are safe. My point is: society accepts countless personal choices that involve risk. So why should extreme athletes be excluded from health insurance just because their risk LOOKS more extreme? You don’t have to agree with my choices — but I think we should understand them before judging them.
