In 1026, Mahmud of Ghazni shattered the sacred lingam with his own hands. Stripped the temple of its gold. Within a decade — it was rebuilt. 1299. Destroyed again by the Delhi Sultanate. Rebuilt once more. 1395. Destroyed again. 1451. Destroyed again. Then in 1665, Aurangzeb ordered its destruction. When he heard it had been rebuilt in secret — he destroyed it again in 1706. Six separate times, across nearly a thousand years, Somnath was reduced to rubble. And six separate times, it rose again. For nearly two and a half centuries after Aurangzeb's final attack — no permanent temple stood here. Then in 1951, after independence, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel made a promise.
