Little Blossom decided last night that she was DONE being a tube-fed baby and was ready to be a big girl! 🥹🌸 After her vet visit yesterday, we got the approval to carefully introduce the nipple. Because Blossom has a small cleft palate, feeding her requires extra caution. A cleft creates an abnormal opening between the mouth and nasal passages, which can allow milk to enter the nose and potentially be aspirated into the lungs. That’s why we started with tube feeding while she was too little or unable to safely create a good suckle. Tube feeding allows us to provide the nutrition she needs without putting milk through that opening before she was ready. Throughout the day, we made several careful attempts with the nipple, watching closely for a proper latch, swallowing, milk coming from her nose, coughing, or any signs that she was struggling. And then… she figured it out! 🥹🍼 Last night, this tiny little warrior latched onto the nipple and decided she was going to be a big girl. 🖤🧡 We’re still taking things slowly and monitoring her closely with every feeding. A good latch is an exciting milestone, but with a cleft palate, safe feeding is always the priority. For such a tiny baby, Blossom has already come such a long way.
