I'm a professional author/witer/editor with over a decade of industry experience in the publishing industry, and I edit the old-fashioned way. My clients have come to me using Grammarly and other means and we've had to clean up so much of their work to get their manuscript ready for publication. I'm currently working with a client who I'm helping to clean up the entire manuscript of her fictional work which is loaded with incorrect Grammerly inserted punctuation marks. It has been a painful process for my client and she's wanted to quit her project more than once but thankfully we are making progress. I know technology speeds things up but it isn't always correct. If you're using it to speed up the process be sure you follow it up with another glance before submitting otherwise you'll end up spending more time fixing errors - yours and the techs.

I print my maniscript, my husband reads it aloud and I write edits on the manuscript pages. then we discuss each chapters' edits, things that are liked or not, then i do the edits on the computer

Grammarly is terrible... But it does a pretty good job at clearing the basics. The advanced features are 99% incorrect/useless, and while it does have a version of 'Re-write this for me', you can easily ignore it. If your goal is to save your editor all the little mistakes, then it's worth the $40 or whatever.

Find a writing community, establish bonds and friendships, have them beta read. This way you can get through developmental and line editing for free and then you can have a copy editor. Cheapest way to go if you are going the self publishing route.

Also, look into the Editorial Freelancers Association when you are ready.

Grammerly can do basic editing checks. It does have the option to use AI, but you don't have to use it.

Clara Abigail has self editing tool guides for sale on her page. $5. Other than that, I paid for a grammarly subscription by mistake last year, so I use grammarly (without using AI) and word. Most of the time they do not agree. When grammarly says it’s great, word says no. Vice versa. It gets easier to self editing/clean up the more you do it. :) I cannot afford a pro editor. My book 1 is a hot mess. Book 2 is less of a hot mess. Book 3 is cleaner. Etc! Any time I’m unsure which tool I should follow, I google.

some programs have grammar tools built in like MS Word, Libreoffice, and a few other word processors. I personally use libreoffice and prowritingaid. that and I got a degree in English creative writing. that means the programs will flag things that it thinks are wrong and I can a tally verify if it's actually wrong or not.
