@jacobsants: Here is a huge update on my Giant Red Bulldog Ant colony... The new huge outworld from @rkyvivariums (On Instagram only) has arrived! This new outworld is 60x35x20cm, which allows the ants to have plenty of space to explore and forage for food, similar to how they would in the wild! In this outworld, I poured a layer of grout, pushed in some driftwood and rocks, and then covered it in red sand to give the ants a naturalistic floor texture without having deep layers of substrate which can make cleaning difficult. This ant species is Myrmecia gulosa, a type of bull or bulldog ant. Workers of this species are around an inch big, so they are also known as the inchman ant! Unlike most ant species, bulldog ants have very good vision, you can even see their eyes if you look closely! My colony of M gulosa are presumed to be the largest bull ant colony in captivity, and I predict they are around 1000 workers strong now, truly immense! However, they do also eat a lot... At least 20 adult crickets a day This colony is housed in a custom made glass vivarium from @rkyvivariums (On Instagram only), attached to 20 @antfarmsupplies TerraVue nests, along with another @antfarmsupplies Terra M nest - They desperately need more, I will be continuing to expand them with more TerraVue nests, they absolutely love them and highly recommend them, especially for bull ants (Myrmecia spp)! #australia #bulldogant #bullant #myrmecia #myrmeciagulosa
