@c_buildingquietwealth: In a world full of manifesting your dream life, allow me to deinfluence you…🫡 From a 39YO regular chic who’s now done contributing to her 401k.🥳 Believing in what you want is important, I’m not dismissing that. But in my experience, actually DOING the thing is what makes it happen. I know, weird. Every 2 weeks for 16 years I’ve had money taken out of my paycheck and invested into my 401k (I’m a fed so I have a TSP). At first it was honestly just a few bucks a month because I was making peanuts. But every time I got a promotion, or bonus I’d increase my contribution percentage. And now, before I’ve even hit 40, if I never put another dollar in I’ll have over $2.7M when I can access the money at 59 1/2. But it’s only because I did the boring, unsexy thing that no one wants to talk about, and I was consistent. Social media wants you to think the only way to build wealth is through flashy, noisy, get-rich-quick schemes. Welcome to the corner of the internet where we’re just over here quietly creating our dream lives with receipts. And don’t care if people know. If that feels like a place you wanna hang out, follow along and sign up for my free weekly newsletter (in bio). Happy you’re here!

When you invest in the Roth or taxable brokerage account, where is that money going toward? Bonds, index funds?

For those who have the option of a ROTH 401k, contribute to that, a ROTH IRA & yr brokerage acct to lessen yr tax exposure (post 59.5yo up to the post RMD years) of regular 401k and IRAs.

That’s what I do with TSP. Never understood the guys that are contributing 10% or more when our employer only matches 5%.

What is the amount your employer 401k has hit that you have decided to lower the contribution?

So do you plan to do Roth conversions or is that already Roth money in your 401(k)?

You are amazing and a big reason I’ve started investing in my future. One question tho, what happens to all that money if you don’t make it to 59yo?

How did you decide to stop contributing vs a back door Roth conversion ladder? Currently trying to figure this out for myself 😅

I have about the same amount and I’m 41, but I’m still contributing 8% which is 3% over my employer match. Plus 8% into my Roth and another 7% into my HSA. It’s hard to stop when the number is low now and it’s what I’ve always done.

How much was your TSP when you decided to stop contributing more than the match?

SEPP is an option: A Substantially Equal Periodic Payment (SEPP) is an IRS-approved strategy that allows you to withdraw money from your retirement accounts before age 59½ without paying the standard 10% early withdrawal penalty

@Charlie- Building Quiet Wealth how is there no stock picking when you have to select where to invest funds for the Roth and taxable brokerage accounts?
