Did you know you can hire your own boat and cruise through Loch Ness—without needing a licence? As part of a longer trip along the Caledonian Canal with Le Boat, we had the chance to do exactly that, and it was one of the most memorable ways to experience the Scottish Highlands. Gliding across Loch Ness felt surreal. The vastness of the water, the changing weather, the quiet—all of it added a kind of atmosphere that’s hard to put into words. We didn’t see Nessie, but there were definitely moments that made us stop and stare a little longer. Learning to captain the boat was straightforward, and once we got going, it was surprisingly intuitive. The journey took us through a mix of open lochs, peaceful stretches of canal, and small towns where we could moor up and explore. It was travel at a slower pace, with time to really connect with the landscape. This part of Scotland is already stunning from the road or the hills—but from the water, it feels entirely different.
