@tracy_tysonmd: Part 2 of respiratory season vaccine myths—this time on the RSV vaccine and monoclonal antibody MYTH 1: “We give the vaccine to both moms and babies.” ❌ Not true. Moms are offered the RSV vaccine, which creates maternal antibodies that cross the placenta and give baby ~6–8 months of protection. If mom couldn’t get vaccinated during pregnancy, we give the baby an antibody injection after birth—same protection, but passive immunity. The baby’s body doesn’t do anything with it; it just lingers ~6–8 months like mom’s antibodies would. MYTH 2: “The RSV vaccine in pregnancy causes premature labor.” ❌ That was a PREVIOUS version pulled from phase 3 trials. The current vaccine does not carry an increased risk—and it’s given between 32–36 weeks as an extra precaution. MYTH 3: “It’s not needed.” ❌ This is the big one. RSV is the #1 cause of hospitalization in newborns and infants under 1 year, every single year. The vaccine (for moms) and antibody (for babies) have cut hospitalizations and deaths by 70–80%. We literally look around clinic asking, “Where are all the RSV babies?” Side effect profile is very low because it’s passive immunity—not a vaccine. MYTH 4: “You can get it with every pregnancy.” ❌ The vaccine is first-pregnancy only. If you have another baby during RSV season, we give that baby the antibody instead.
