@literature.girl6: Some of the most widely read books in the world have also been among the most challenged, censored, or removed from classrooms and libraries. Not always for the same reason. Some confronted racism and sexual violence. Others attacked political or religious authority, contained language considered offensive, or dealt openly with subjects that institutions decided certain readers shouldn’t encounter. From Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men and Morrison’s The Bluest Eye to Orwell’s 1984 and Animal Farm, these books became controversial precisely because they force readers into uncomfortable conversations. And that’s an important distinction: “challenged” and “banned” aren’t interchangeable. A challenge is an attempt to restrict or remove a book; whether it actually gets removed depends on the place, institution, and time period. Maybe the more interesting question isn’t simply “Why was this book challenged?” but: What was it saying that made people uncomfortable enough to challenge it? Save this list for your reading pile — and tell me which challenged or historically censored book you’d add. 📲 Bookspark App — discover your next read, explore literature, and keep the books you don’t want to forget in one place. #BannedBooks #ChallengedBooks #ClassicLiterature #BookRecommendations #Bookstagram
